Taming Trolls and Adult Swaddling

In this podcast, Nora Young talks about research suggesting pretty much any of us can be a troll, or otherwise just plain nasty online, given the right circumstances (via Technology Review). And, Cathi Bond shares this video on the trend in Japan towards adult women being swaddled and rocked. 1. So all I need to do is be in a bad mood and post a nasty comment here, and the whole blog will devolve into a flame war, huh? Hmm….

I think discourse is still a good thing, and I think that we're still struggling to come to terms with the idea that everyone has the means to be a broadcaster. We've all seen those TV news location shoots where people are in the background hamming it up for the camera, and those situations where someone finds an open mic at a public event and takes full advantage of the situation to let everyone know what a goof he is. There are people who like to draw attention to themselves, and they don't really care whether they're making a positive or negative impression.

On the Internet, I've given up on the idea of anonymity, because I think it brings out the worst in people. I don't give any credibility to posts or comments or sites created by people who refuse to use their names. And, to be honest, I don't have the energy to wade through all the content I'm interested in, let alone the comments and conversations around the content. But I don't think I'm ready to entirely give up on the idea of many-to-many discourse. I've met too many smart people and learned to much to dismiss it as no longer valuable.

I'm also not giving up on the Sniffer, even if I don't regularly come to the blog for links to these stories and more. 🙂

    • Hey John,

Sorry to be so long approving your comment! Yikes! I'm not ready to give up on it yet, either. I'm just feeling very down about it right now. People seem so angry, so outraged, so it's discouraging.

(We really are going to have to work on that "and more" bit!)
