  1. Isn't the maximum range for a taser around 35 feet? Plus, you only get one shot. I think if I were facing a grizzly (or even a pissed off bull), I'd want something that works from further away with a bit more reliability. It doesn't have to be a shotgun or anything. I don't have anything against tranquilizer darts.

Oh, and the theme was Bonanza ( This is Rawhide (

  2. Ah, ha ha. Bonanza! Thanks for that. I defer to Cathi for all things taser-related….

  3. Ohmygawd! It was Bonanza? How humiliating. I have been caught out. And John regarding the taser range, that seemed far to me as well but that' what they claim. I think one of my favourite taser moments is when Lisabeth Salander zaps that biker in the crotch. Have you seen or read the books?

  4. Well, to weigh in on the taser thing…. We live in the West Kootenays (south central BC) and we certainly have wildlife. A black bear on the deck the other night (5 am), coyotes, deer, the occasional elk, grizzlies further up in the hills… IMHO, a taser wouldn't be much use on anything, even the semi-tame deer 'cause you can't get close enough or they're visiting in the middle of the night. We have the yard fenced (wire and electric) to keep the critters out of the gardens, and mostly it works – not so much for the bear…. As soon as they catch sight or sound or smell of you, they're off. You get trained into not leaving your garbage cans outside, bringing in the bird feeders at night, using compost worms during some seasons rather than the outside compost pile…. Anyhow, I can't see the Taser being very useful. We have pepper spray that covers that distance – for when we're hiking. Generally, the wildlife is pretty timid. Oh, and the coyotes? Don't worry about them – they're timid too and they keep the rodents and stray cats under control. 😉

  5. Hi Dave,

Interesting; thanks for the wildlife insight!

There is actually a surprising amount of wildlife right in Toronto, because of the network of renaturalized areas in the Don Valley system. Riding my bike, I've seen foxes, deer, hawks and hares. The foxes, at least, are so used to people, they are way less timid than I'd imagine. They'll kind of suss you out, and then go back to hunting voles or whatever. (I always thought they were nocturnal, but I've seen them roaming a couple of times in broad daylight).
