The Sniffer, Aug 5, 2011: Trends in Marketing and Remote Control

In this trendwatching podcast, Cathi Bond talks about ad agency, Wieden and Kennedy’s successful SHOP a collaborative, free-wheelin’ 5 day event in their offices, which brought NYC designers together (via JC Report). Could this sort of collaboration and energy be a good model for a recession-strapped retail sector?

Meanwhile, Nora Young mentions a fun and funky remote-controlled kitchen island, which you can operate with a custom-built iPhone app (via PSFK) Nora thinks that with the rise of the Internet of Things, we’re going to see more and more remote-controlled objects in our environment. She also thinks the idea of creating products with custom-made apps is the future. It’s the natural extension of brands with real-world products building companion apps to extend the brand.

  1. My itunes subscription is reporting the sniffer as not responding, and when I came to the website to see if it was still there, I see a bunch of error lines at the top of the screen that says, for example:

Deprecated: Assigning the return value of new by reference is deprecated in /home/thesniff/public_html/wp-settings.php on line 472

Is this perhaps why iTunes is not finding the podcast?

  2. Hi Lianne,

Many thanks for reporting back on what you’ve seen. The ‘deprecated’ error messages are definitely a problem, which we hope to sort out shortly. I have been out of the country and not checking the site, so I’m not sure how long these messages have been appearing. Some of our iTunes problems precede this, but they may well be related. We’ll try to get things sorted as soon as we can.

    Thanks again for the info!

  3. The messages are gone, and iTunes just downloaded this episode, so things are looking good!

  4. Thanks for the update, Lianne. We still have some fixes to do, but at least the feed is working and subscribers are getting episodes. Thanks for your support!

  5. Thanks to all for letting us know. I’ve been in Montreal without Internet access, but I see that the magnificent cyber goddess Nora and you Lianne have been at the ready. And if there is anyone else helping thank you as well.
