Trends: Health 2.0 and Learning From Geckos

In this trendwatching podcast, Cathi Bond highlights the trend towards monitoring your health online and sharing peer-based information about chronic health concerns, such as at sites like CureTogether

Is this a sign of collaborative, non-hierarchical information-sharing, or a troubling reliance on people who don’t actually know anything about medicine? (via BetterHumans)

Meanwhile, in pressing gecko news, Nora Young talks about new research into how geckos are able to stick so well to walls, and then release.  Researchers think they’ve found a way to mimic it. Great example of biomimetic design, and also of the potential for adhesives that you can remove and replace. Nora’s very excited….Cathi, not so much! (via Technology Review)

Your mention of geckos this episode reminds me of a TED Talk I saw a few months ago by Robert Full, entitled “Secrets of movement, from geckos and roaches” (I personally found the part how ants are able to walk on any type of contoured terrain to be particularly fascinating). Check it out if you haven’t seen it already, it’s a must-watch! :)

    p.s.
    love the show!
